With no society having existed previously we were keen to create a strong identity for MASS and thus with financial support from both the department and the IMA we were able to design and produce our new logo and professional website. Further to this we purchased various proportional materials such as pens, pencils and note pads with the IMA and MASS logos because a mathematician can never have too many!

MASS now boasts a 155 strong membership which is a tribute to the hard work and effort that everyone involved has dedicated to it. As a society we run many activities to try and involve and engage all our members with particular emphasis on creating an environment where students and academics can work together on a more informal basis.

To this effect MASS organises a weekly maths café where students can get extra help with their weekly assessments, or just discuss areas of interest with members of staff. We have organised a rota system with the staff that help out for free which we are very grateful for, and as a thank you we serve free tea and biscuits throughout the session.

This term we have also had a visit from Peter Rowlett from the IMA who gave two separate talks on careers for mathematicians and cryptology. We highly recommend Peter to other societies having had excellent feedback from our members. A highlight was the cryptology talk where we were given the opportunity to create and break our own ciphers in a competitive environment. Building on this success we are hoping next term to organise several talks by post grads and senior staff within the department on active research areas that really interest them to give undergrads a better understanding of how the department works and future opportunities within the department and the mathematics community.

On top of the academic side we also run many socials to encourage people to make new friends and contacts with the aim of creating a larger support network. And of course we above all we aim to have a good time. We’ve organised fancy dress night with theme the letters M.A.S.S, Christmas lunch and we have also conducted a joint social with the Lancaster University Physics & Astronomy Society (LUPAS) as a way of encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation.
Our first term as a society has been a very busy and successful one and we are looking forward to building on this foundation in the following years.

Danielle Bartram
MASS President

Report on activities of Newcastle University Maths Society

There follows a report I have received of the 2008/9 activities of the Newcastle University Maths Society by Stacey Aston. An IMA University Liaison Grant was used to support the guest lectures, raffle, decorations and advertising materials for the Christmas Party and materials and prizes for the regular quizzes. Details about University Liaison Grants to support the activities of mathematical student groups are available through the IMA Student webpage at www.ima.org.uk/student.

Peter Rowlett

The 08/09 academic year was yet again a great one for the Newcastle University Maths Society. We kicked off the events with a pub crawl in the first week. With involvement from the first years greater than ever we knew there were some fun times ahead. The pub crawls continued once a month, with the best being when we introduced a ‘ravers’ theme. To add to these we started a monthly quiz, these became so popular, among students and staff alike, that they were noticed by the school who now sponsor us to help pay for them.

November witnessed the first of our guest lectures, given by Peter Rowlett. This was an introductory talk on Cryptography followed by an interactive session giving students the opportunity to test there deciphering skills using a computer programme. This was followed by a trip to the outdoor ice skating rink later in the month as well as a meal at the local Chinese. To bid everyone a fond farewell at the end of the first term we held a Christmas Party. A three-course meal, free raffle and complimentary drinks made sure the night was a fitting end to an exciting and eventful first term.

In January we saw off the exam period in style with a weekend trip to Amsterdam, by far the biggest event the Maths Society has seen in a few years. Further to this we organised another guest lecture given by Prof. Robin Johnson on the History of Mathematics, a couple of Deloitte career talks and an outing to Durham to go bowling. This ensured we had a second term jam pack with events.

The final term provided our members with the last of our guest lectures. Another given by Peter Rowlett, this time a talk based around the Wii called Spin in Ball Games. The year was finished off with a spectacular summer ball. The evening involved a gorgeous Spanish buffet followed by a three hour Tyne River cruise to end the year in style.

Stacey Aston, Newcastle University

Setting up a Maths Society

When I first started to set up the Maths society I thought it would be a pretty easy thing to do, grab fifteen like minded individuals and make one of them treasurer and another secretary, and there we go a Maths society. But as I was going to find out, things were slightly more complicated than that. Finding fifteen initial members was no problem, I knew enough people on my course to sort that out so that wasn’t going to be too hard but the more everything slowly got set up, the more that sprung up, all of which I was unsure of a definite answer to. Stuff like, “What does a Maths society do?”, “Why make a Maths society?” along with “We’re not just going to meet up and do Maths equations are we?” In all seriousness my answer to these questions initially was quite vague and uncertain.

So to start with I went about answering these questions. As a Maths Society what would we do? I decided that the best way to answer this was to put together an executive committee to help run the society. Now when I was signing up my initial fifteen members the question I kept being asked was, ‘I don’t have to do anything, do I?’, and although they didn’t I wanted people to get involved with the committee and other stuff to do with the society, so I had to try a different approach to find a decent committee. I wanted people from different years other than my own and being that I only knew a few people in other years I decided to seek out the help from the convener of our staff-student committee meetings, Andy White. With Andy’s help I was able to email the entire Maths department to try and find anyone interested in joining the committee and helping out with the society. I received an amazing response and I went about meeting up with people in various areas of the university from the library to the student union to discuss everything we could do and to see if they themselves had any great ideas.

In order to set up a society at Heriot-Watt you need a minimum of a president, a treasurer and a secretary. There is however the option to create more committee positions. So with such interest in positions on the committee I decided to create two further positions that of vice president and social secretary. The vice-presidents job would be to help me out with running the society and the job of the social secretary would be to help with setting up and running of social and networking events. Once I had put together our committee it was time to make our society official, so all that was left to do in terms of setting up the society was to hand in all the forms to the student union and get us affiliated with them. This took about a week, and involved a meeting between the student union and the society’s convener to decide whether we were a suitable society or not. After that it was official, the Math society was founded, all was done, or was it? This was merely the beginning. True, I had accomplished what I had set out to do. The Maths society was created but this is not by a long way the end of things. I now have a great committee and that will be the start of making a great society, but as a society we will, in my opinion, only be the best when we have recruited most of the Math department to our society and have everyone involved in the events that we will hopefully put on in the forthcoming academic year.

Coming back to the questions I didn’t have too much of an idea how to answer when I started out, I’m still not too sure how to answer them, you’ll have to ask me in year, we may end up sitting down and looking at equations, I hope not, but for all I know we could. I hope that we can get everyone in our department to work together in order to develop a more integrated peer supportive learning system along with plenty of social activities and career events.

So that’s how I set up a Math society, with the help of others, there are lots of ways to go about it so here’s some tips I’d like to finish with that I hope will prove useful;

You can’t do it alone, find people to help you out

Have a rough idea what you want the society to be set up for (for example is it for social activities, math based activities, careers or further math education)

Go to your student union and find out as much as possible with regards to how the societies in your university work and how to go about setting them up

Find out what money you can get for your student union and look into applying for grants (IMA offer a grant for Math societies, check it out on the student part of their website)

Get as many people involved as possible, the more the merrier and the more successful you will be

Look at other well established societies and where possible find out how they did it.

Once you are set up, get your committee together and decide how the society is going to be run and what activities and events you are looking to put on.

Finally don’t be scared, just go for it, and aim to be the best society that you can be.

Mathematics at St Andrews University

Chaosoc is the mathematics society of the University of St Andrews. When Peter came to talk to my Society (Matrix) it was a great chance for our members to discover where their qualification could take them in the future.

Matrix a well established society, with three large Sponsors - KPMG, Watson Wyatt and Teach First. Part of our agreements with these companies is that they'll provide termly skills sessions for our members. KPMG for example have run an In-tray session, as well as a session on Commercial Awareness. The aim is to develop business skills and make us more employable undergrads. The only downside of this (If you can consider it a downside) is that the talks tend to be fairly company focused.

The talk given by Peter was valuable because it was providing a much more general overview of what the future could have in store. Despite being advertised just the day before it was happening, the event still showed a fantastic turnout. In the current economic climate, its clear undergraduates are searching for ways to get ahead in the game.

My role of President will be coming to a close in a couple of months time, however my experiences to date have proved to me how student societies can provide so much more than an opportunity to go out with your course mates. Matrix attempts to support its members in other ways too - Every fresher gets assigned a mentor within the maths department. This time he was speaking to our maths students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd years on the different maths careers available to maths graduates. He gave a very entertaining half-hour talk which was followed by one of our lecturers (Dr Mayur Patel) giving advice on how to present a CV which was also very informative and no-less entertaining.

I was very glad that Peter reminded our students about what the QAA says maths graduates can offer to employers: 'they will also be able to work independently with patience and persistence, pursuing the solution of a problem to its conclusion' and perhaps more importantly the areas that maths graduates tend to be weaker in - communication skills, team work etc. This certainly helped our students to see why we emphasise these things in courses such as modelling skills and our final year group project.

This was a very valuable meeting and I would recommend maths departments at other universities to invite Peter to give a similar presentation.

After-talk networking

Like many maths societies, the University of Birmingham's Mathsoc organises external speakers to come in and give open lectures. For this society, though, it happens to be a very new thing: the society hadn't organised anything like this for 12 years, and back then it had been very shortlived, too.

It was important to us, therefore, that this time our effort be more substantial and sustainable. We received funding from a variety of sources, allowing us to pay for the speakers expenses and the like, but the IMA provided us with the means for a networking opportunity afterwards. Initially, we tried just bringing everyone to the university bar, but takeup was poor. The IMA grant allows us to put on a drinks reception in the Maths building afterwards, in a much more intimate and pleasant setting that encourages undergraduates to mix with postgrads and lecturers. This went down much better, and participants were much more positive about the event. At the same time, we provided information about the opportunities the IMA can offer anyone in a maths-related career, adding a personal development dimension to the event.

The IMA's grant made a huge contribution to the open talks the Maths society organises and the relationship between the different parts of the department. It is this extra success that should mean that the open talks and networking continue for years to come, even after this current committee is gone, and for that we are grateful!

Dr. Peter Eccles lectures for The Galois Group - Wednesday 3rd December 08

Dear All,

You are invited to attend the next Galois Group lecture, which will be given by Dr. Peter Eccles on Wednesday 3rd December 2008 at 1:10-2pm in the Alan Turing Building (room G.205). Leon Battista Alberti wrote the first text on this subject in 1435. I will describe his method for drawing a square tiled pavement and illustrate it using a photograph of the Alan Turing Building taken by Nick Higham.

Alberti's work led to questions about what geometrical features different views of the same object might have in common. The answer to this question was provided by Girard Desargues in 1639 with the introduction of projective geometry. In this, additional 'points at infinity' are added to the Euclidean plane so that any pair of straight lines in the plane meet at a unique point (which is a point at infinity if the lines are parallel). This feature is observed when viewing straight railway lines going into the distance: they appear to meet at a point at infinity. I will give an example of how Desargues was able to unify certain disparate results in Euclidean geometry, by observing that they are all special cases of a single result in projective geometry.

In more modern times, topologists have studied the projective plane as a single object in its own right. In 1902, Werner Boy constructed a model of the projective plane in three dimensional Euclidean space. I will describe one method for constructing this model. I will also mention some unsolved problems relating to models of this type.

***********************************************************

Two Student Lectures by The Galois Group

Dear All,

The Galois Group returns with another set of general audience lectures, but on this occasion you will be presented with two lectures given by undergraduate students. The Galois Group is an undergraduate Mathematics society* at the UoM, who aim to organise regular general audience lectures throughout the year, given by staff and undergraduate students.

The lecture was titled Categorification, a word which spell check refuses to correct, and one which I had trouble pronouncing myself when introducing Professor Ray! What's categorification? you ask. Well perhaps Professor Ray's abstract (below) might give you a brief idea, but this does not mean that I do not remember his lecture (although it was on Wednesday 13th October 2008 - some time ago, I hope you will agree!).

"Thousands of years ago, when people were learning to count their sheep (amongst other things!) the process of decategorification was seen as a stroke of genius, that allowed the development of number. During the last 30 years, it has dawned on mathematicians and theoretical physicists that the time has come to reverse this process, and work through ideas that had never been properly developed beforehand, but which are just as fundamental to mathematics as counting. In its own language, categorification involves replacing sets with categories, functions with functors, and equations with natural isomorphisms. I shall try to make some sense of this for a general mathematical audience."

In the build up to the lecture you could say that I had been surprisingly optimistic, namely due to the large room that I had booked in the Alan Turing building for the lecture. I wasn't to be disappointed (surprisingly!) as a record number of 89 people - ranging from undergraduate students, staff and some guests - attended a fantastic and interactive lecture. The one thing that stands out from these lectures is the atmosphere throughout the event. It was electric. I left the building for a second and observed the audience, which reminded me of why I enjoy organising these events. Everyone seemed to be in a different world altogether - that of categorification and counting sheep!

There exists a group of students (half of our audience!) who want to attend such lectures, and now they have the opportunity to do so. This year I have been trying to advertise the lectures in other universities around Manchester, and at the refreshments after the lecture (during which only one Jaffa Cake survived!) I was pleasantly surprised to find a retired IMA member there, who asked to be added to the mailing list for future lectures. The refreshments are as important as the lectures in my opinion, for they give students the chance to interact with staff and other mathematicians too, and you can always interrogate the speaker on something you didn't understand!

Such lectures are also a brilliant way of giving someone a snippet of a certain topic in maths. Now categorification is a blessed topic which has something for everyone (well there was mention of finite sets, abelian groups, vector spaces, knots etc), but if after the lecture you don't find it appetising then that's perfectly okay. The lectures are windows into areas of mathematics that one might not have the luxury of studying.

Whoops I digress! (I'm afraid you'll have to get used to this!). Overall the first lecture of the semester was a success, and I would like to thank all those who attended and I look forward to seeing you all at the next student lectures (which will be advertised in due course).

*Note: more than one society exists. We cater for the mathematical community whereas mathsoc caters for the "social aspects" of University life.

UoG MathSoc go to Thorpe Park

On 14th October 30 maths students and 2 lecturers from the university of Greenwich went to Thorpe Park. Our improved itinerary, packed with enjoyable events saw the member count to be almost double expectations.

The year began with a pub quiz during Fresher’s week allowing students to meet their new lecturers. This was followed by a couple of thoroughly enjoyed pub crawls and days out paintballing and bowling.

Two of our main events were the guest lectures given by Professor Robin Johnson and Dr Phil Ansell. These were particularly enjoyed by students and lecturers alike. As these events were open to anyone we also had students from different courses come along to enjoy these lectures. Guest lectures are a main area to focus on next year as we look to increase the number and range of these on offer.

Moreover, MathSoc used its connections with Deloitte to organize several talks. Here, students had the opportunity to talk with current Deloitte employees and discuss the various employment opportunities that Deloitte can offer graduates. Many students found these very useful.

MathSoc would like to thank the IMA for their contribution as much of this would not have been possible without it. After just recieving confirmation that the IMA will be sponsoring us again over the 08/09 academic year we are very excited about the events to come.

So far this year we have already held a very successful pub crawl and pub quiz. Both of these events were attended by many members, and after annoncing that we have now booked a trip to Amsterdam in January more and more people are joining MathSoc everyday.

Without the help of an IMA grant it would be much harder for us to provide our members with brilliant opportunities like these that enhance their University experience. So again, we thank the IMA for their support and hope that we can strengthen our relationship with them and their relationship with our members over the coming year.

Greenwich University MathSoc - T-shirts

Hi, my name is Noel-Ann Bradshaw and I work at the University Greenwich studying for a PhD and doing some part-time teaching. Also, some universities have told me they don’t have a student group in mathematics and would like one, so a resource for seeing how other such groups operate would be a useful one. Finally, it is useful for me to keep track of all the good news there is from the student groups involved with the IMA.
